Privacy Policy
Effective July 13, 2026
1. Summary
MeterMiser (operated by sokkos, LLC) is an informational service that helps you track residential electric and natural gas supplier rates. To do that we collect your email, the utility information you choose to enter, and — if you use bill scanning — the details extracted from bills you upload. We don't sell your data, we don't share your contact information with energy suppliers, and wedon't run third-party ads or ad trackers. You can download everything we hold about you, or delete your account, self-serve from the dashboard. The full details are below.
2. What we collect
Account data.Email address and password. We never see your plain-text password — it's hashed by our authentication provider (Supabase).
Onboarding data. ZIP code, utility-type interest (Electric, Natural Gas, or Both), and whether you opted in to seasonal email reminders.
Utility account data. Information you choose to enter about your supply contracts: utility company, current supplier, current rate, contract start and end dates, annual usage, property nickname or address, and notification preferences. This is the data the savings calculator and alerts act on.
Bill-scan data. If you use the optional bill-scan feature, the photo or PDF you upload is processed in memory and sent to our AI provider (Anthropic) to read the details, then discarded — the image itself is never stored by us. From it we extract utility details (supplier, rates, usage and usage history, billing period, charge subtotals, and service city and ZIP) to pre-fill the account form for your review. We deliberately do not extract your name or account number. We retain the extracted figures — plus city and ZIP for regional trends, but never your street address in these records — along with any corrections you make, and use them to improve scanning accuracy and understand rate trends. If you delete your account these records are de-identified rather than deleted (see §7).
Billing data. If you subscribe to a paid plan, payment details are collected directly by Stripe on their hosted checkout and billing portal. We never see your full card number or CVC. We store a Stripe customer ID, subscription ID, and subscription status so we can link your billing record to your account.
Push notification data. If you enable push notifications, we store the push subscription your browser generates (an endpoint URL plus delivery keys) so we can send alerts to that device. You can turn this off anytime from the dashboard or your browser settings.
Technical data.Standard server logs from our hosting provider (Vercel) — IP address, browser, the page requested, and timestamp — used for debugging and abuse prevention. If the app hits an error, our error monitoring service (Sentry) receives a technical report of what went wrong; we've configured it not to attach your personal details to those reports, and we don't use it to track your behavior.
We do not collect: precise geolocation, biometric data, health data, government IDs, third-party tracking cookies, or advertising identifiers.
3. How we use your data
- Run the service: show your accounts, compare them against current rate data, compute savings estimates, and send contract-expiration and cheaper-offer alerts (paid plans).
- Process payments and manage subscriptions (via Stripe).
- Send transactional email (welcome, alerts, account and billing notices) and — only if you opted in — seasonal rate-shopping reminders.
- Diagnose bugs, monitor errors, and prevent abuse.
- Improve the service using de-identified, aggregated analysis — for example, regional rate trends by city or ZIP, or which utilities need the most scraping attention. We may publish insights from aggregated data (for example, average rates by region); those insights never identify you, and we don't attempt to re-identify de-identified data.
We do notsell or rent your personal data, and we don't share your contact information with energy suppliers — the lead-selling model is exactly what MeterMiser is built to avoid. We don't use your data for cross-context behavioral advertising, and we don't make automated decisions about you that have legal or similarly significant effects.
4. Who we share it with
We share data only with the vendors that deliver the service (each bound to use it solely for our purposes), and in the narrow legal circumstances listed after them.
- Supabase — database and authentication. Stores your account, profile, and utility data.
- Stripe — payment processing. Receives your email, payment method, and billing details you provide at checkout.
- Vercel — application hosting. Receives your IP address and the requests your browser makes.
- Resend — email delivery. Receives your email address and the content of emails we send you (welcome, alerts, account notices, opted-in reminders).
- Anthropic— AI bill-scan processing. Receives the bill image or PDF you upload, solely to extract the details shown back to you; per Anthropic's API terms, data sent this way is not used to train their models.
- Sentry — error monitoring. Receives technical error reports (stack traces, browser/OS, request metadata), configured to exclude personal details.
- Browser push services(Google, Apple, or Mozilla, depending on your browser) — deliver push notifications you've enabled, including the alert text.
- GitHub Actions — runs the daily rate scraper. Receives no customer data; it reads public PUCO data and writes rate rows to our database.
Our uptime monitor pings our public site and receives no user data. Beyond vendors, we may disclose data (a) to comply with law or valid legal process, (b) to protect the rights, safety, or property of our users, the public, or MeterMiser, or (c) as part of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets — in which case this policy continues to apply to your data and we'll notify you of any successor. Each vendor has its own privacy policy; email us for links.
5. Cookies and local storage
We use one category of cookie: the authentication session set by our auth provider so you stay signed in. We don't use analytics cookies, advertising cookies, or third-party tracking pixels, so there's nothing to opt out of. We also keep a few preferences (like your offer-filter settings and dismissed banners) in your browser's local storage — those stay on your device and aren't transmitted to us.
Because we don't sell data or share it for cross-context advertising, browser signals like Do Not Track and Global Privacy Control don't change anything about how we treat you — the protections they request are already everyone's default here.
6. Where your data lives
MeterMiser is a United States service; your data is stored and processed in the United States by the vendors listed in §4.
7. Data retention
Account and utility data — kept while your account is active. When you delete your account (from your dashboard, or by emailing us) we cancel any active subscription first, then remove your profile, properties, utility accounts, push subscriptions, notification settings, and alert history.
Bill-scan records — the extracted figures described in §2 are retained after account deletion in de-identified form: the link to your account is removed, and the records contain no name, account number, or street address — only figures plus city and ZIP. This keeps the aggregate accuracy and trend dataset intact without keeping anything about you.
Billing records — Stripe retains records of past transactions (as a cancelled customer) where required for tax, accounting, and fraud-prevention purposes.
Server logs and error reports— rotate out on our vendors' standard schedules (roughly 30 days for hosting logs, about 90 days for error reports).
8. Security
All traffic is encrypted in transit (HTTPS). Passwords are hashed — we genuinely cannot recover them. Database access is enforced by row-level security so each user can only read or modify their own rows, and the sensitive datasets (like bill-scan records) are writable only by our servers, not by browsers. Payment details never touch our servers — Stripe holds those. Bill images are processed in memory and never written to storage.
No system is perfectly secure. If we discover a breach affecting your personal data, we will notify you promptly at your account email and as otherwise required by applicable law, including Ohio's breach-notification statute.
9. Your rights and choices
You can do all of the following, anytime, self-serve:
- Access / port — download a complete copy of your data as JSON with Download my data in your plan card.
- Correct — edit your email, ZIP, preferences, and utility data from settings and the dashboard.
- Opt out of marketing— toggle seasonal reminders off in settings or use the unsubscribe link in any reminder email. Transactional email (billing, security, alerts you've configured) isn't marketing and continues while your account is active.
- Disable push— from the dashboard toggle or your browser's site settings.
- Delete — Delete account in your plan card removes everything described in §7, cancels any subscription, and signs you out. Bill-scan records are de-identified as described there, and legally required billing records remain with Stripe.
We honor these rights for everyone, regardless of state. If you live in a state with a consumer privacy law (California, Virginia, Colorado, Connecticut, and others) you may have additional statutory rights — email privacy@metermiser.com with your state and request and we'll honor it within the statutory deadline. You may use an authorized agent (we'll verify the authorization), and we will never discriminate against you — in price, features, or service — for exercising a privacy right. If you believe we've fallen short, you can also contact your state's attorney general.
10. Children
The service is for adults — you must be 18 to have an account, because utility contracts are adult obligations. We don't knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 18, and certainly not from children under 13. If you believe a minor has provided us personal information, email us and we'll delete it.
11. Changes to this policy
When we make material changes, we'll update the Effective Date above and notify you by email at the address on file before the changes take effect. If a change would materially expand how we use data we already hold about you, we'll ask for your consent rather than assume it. Continued use after the effective date constitutes acceptance.
